Kate McConnell is a visual artist who lives and works in Washington, DC and Provincetown, MA.
Before painting full-time, Kate enjoyed a rich career as a
noted book designer and graphic artist at Time Life Books, Smithsonian Press, and for over a decade, as an instructor in Graphic Arts and Book Arts at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington DC.
Kate was raised in rural western Pennsylvania, which gave
her an enduring respect of nature, landscape, and agrarian culture.
She enjoys the spontaneity of plein air painting in DC’s
Rock Creek Park and the dunes and forests of Cape Cod,
and the effort to reinterpret those outdoor experiences in
She works in oils and gouache, exploring through use of vibrant color, light, and form the sensations of the natural elements in the landscape with spirited freshness and honesty.
Kate is represented by the Touchstone Gallery in Washington, DC and the Rouge Gallery, Red Inn in Provincetown, MA.
She shows at the Capitol Hill Art League, DC, the Art League Gallery in Alexandria, VA, and Provincetown Art Association and Museum, MA.
Her work is collected in the United States and Europe.

I have a steadfast connection to the outdoors.
Much of my work is landscape inspired, reflecting the
sensations I perceive in trees, dunes and other natural forms.
I am particularly fascinated by the structure of trees which to me are evocative of human gesture and spirit, and remind me that we and the natural world share similar vulnerabilities to the passing of time, environmental degradation and a changing climate.
My goal is to capture nature’s vitality with paint.
